~*~*~ HARMONOGRAPHIC ART ~*~*~

Here is a detailed description of a Harmonograph drawing machine.

A Harmonograph is a revolutionary drawing machine using scientific principles to enable you to produce your own works of art. It can be used by the youngest child yet the intricate drawings make a fascinating and rewarding hobby for adults.

Above you can see how we clamp the machine to the side of a table. You can clamp it onto any surface that has an edge wide enough for the clamps and allows the pendulums to hang vertically. I clamp mine to my desk top.

Drawing frame A (with interchangeable pivot bearings B & C).
Paper holder and backing board - D.
Pen holder - E.
Pen holder pivot (supplied separately) - F.
Pen holder arm - G.
Gantry - H.
Pendulum arms I1, I2, I3. (comprising 3 snap together pieces for each arm).
Pendulum weights - J (and 4 weight bungs).
Clamps - K.
Sheets of paper - L.
Pens - M.

1. Press the bearing pivots into the square holes at the top corners of the frame making sure the knife edges are pointing upwards. There is one long pivot and one short pivot, the long pivot is to support the pendulum with the pen holder on.

2. Fill the weights with equal amounts of heavy material such as sand, salt etc., insert the white bungs into the holes to prevent leakage. The heavier the weights the better the results.

3. Clamp the frame to the edge of a flat level surface.

4. Snap the pendulum sections together as shown.

5. Slide the paper holder onto one of the pendulums and lock in position with the clamp at the rear. Suspend this pendulum from the short pivot.

6. Slide the gantry onto the other pendulum with the narrow end facing towards the drawing board. (This may be reversed to draw pictures on the extreme edge of the paper if required.) Lock the gantry with the cam A.

7. Slide the pen holder arm through the two holes on the gantry and lock in position with cam B and fix the pen pivot with the pivot vertical onto the two pegs.

8. Slide the weights onto the pendulums and lock in position with cams. (NB the weight on the pen holding pendulum should be higher than that on the other one for best results.)

9. Choose a pen and insert it into the pen holder and place the pen holder on the pivot making sure that it swings freely.

10. Insert a sheet of paper into the four grips around the drawing board.

5. Gently rock the paper holding pendulum, using the small lever at the top. Initially the required amount of swing should be no more than 3" either side of the rest position. When the required amount of swing is achieved, release the leaver and allow a few swings for the movement to stabilize.

6. Take hold of the pen in the normal drawing position, hold as near the paper as possible. Draw in a circular motion so that the pen holding pendulum is now swinging in harmony with the movement of pen. Gently release the pen which will automatically drop to the surface of the paper.

The paper supplied with the Harmonograph has a shiny gloss finish to allow the pen to slide smoothly over the surface.

If you are interested in attempting to buy your own Harmonograph drawing machine this little bit of information may help you. Written on the box is ......
